Methodological note
The Statistics on affiliates of foreign companies in Catalonia provide information on the chief characteristics and economic indicators of affiliates located in Catalonia from a dual perspective. Firstly, they examine the characteristics and results of the establishments of the affiliates of foreign companies located in Catalonia. Secondly, they focus on the characteristics and results of the affiliates of foreign companies based in Catalonia.
The basic unit of research is the company under foreign control. A company is understood to be any organizational unit that produces goods or services that enjoys a certain degree of decision-making autonomy, mainly when allocating the current resources. An establishment is understood to be the local unit without its own legal identity that depends on a company under foreign control.
From 2019, the results for Spain are shown using the statistical companies unit, while for Catalonia the results continue to be shown in legal units.
In 2021, methodological improvements were applied, so that the results for the year 2021 are not strictly comparable with those of previous years.
