Methodological note

The Industrial Price Index (IPRI) is a short-term indicator which measures changes in the prices of products manufactured by industry in the first stage of marketing. Sales prices are ex-works and do not include transport or marketing expenses prevailing on any particular day (list and catalogue prices are excluded). VAT is not included but all other taxes net of production subsidies are.

The indexes use chained Laspeyres methodology, with weightings set for the base year (2015), in line with the information from the Structural Business Statistics in the Industrial Sector and other sources.

A continuous survey is taken of some 9.000 establishments every month in order to produce this short-term indicator. The more than 1.500 industrial products which make up the basket for the IPRI Base 2015 basically follow the PRODCOM (Community Production) classification for harmonization of statistics for industrial production in EU countries.

In compliance with EU regulations, since January 2018 the indexes have been published with the new base 2015 and following the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities 2009 (CCEA-2009). The linked series of indexes are published as of January 2002.

The implementation of this new base improves the representativeness of the indicator with changes in the composition of the product basket and the updating of the weighting structure.

The index covers all industrial sectors except for construction. It looks at the activity branches of the extractive industries, manufacturing industry, electricity, gas and water supply in sections B, C, D and E in the CCEA-09.

IPRI information is broken down into the six main industrial groupings set out in the Regulation referred to above, to which Idescat adds an additional breakdown by capital goods and intermediate goods for Catalonia. There are also four sections of the CCEA-09 (extractive industries, manufacturing industries, the supply of electricity and gas and the supply of water) and the divisions of manufacturing industry.
