The Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) offers information in relation to the names and surnames of the whole population resident in Catalonia, data from the Population Register of Catalonia. This information is similar to that provided by other statistical institutes in Europe, which include the Belgium's National Institute of Statistics, Norway's National Statistics Institute, and the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE).

This database shows the frequency of the different names and surnames of men and women residing in Catalonia. The data can be viewed in order of frequency of each name or surname. You can also make a specific search for any name or surname and find out how frequently it appears in the population. This information can be obtained for the whole of Catalonia and by counties, and also in the case of names by year of birth.

It should be explained that the source used to produce the database contains the names in capital letters without accents so that , in some cases it is not possible to differentiate between names in Catalan and Spanish, when the accent is the only differentiating feature. In these cases the two options are presented together (Maria/María, Àlex/Álex) and surnames do not carry accents (Sole, Vila, Garcia).
