Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 04/2023. Provisional data

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 3.2% in the month of April as compared to the previous year and stands at 3,516,515 people, according to provisional data. El Baix Penedès (4.4%), La Selva (3.9%) and El Tarragonès (3.8%) are the counties with the highest year-over-year increases. On the other hand, the number of registered employed individuals fell in La Ribera d'Ebre and Aran (both −1.5%).

Compared with March 2023, the number of contributors increased by 1.4% in Catalonia as a whole and also in 38 counties.

By sex and compared with a year ago, the number of women affiliated to the Social Security in Catalonia as a whole increased by 3.4%, higher than the increase in the number of men, which was 3.0%.

In Catalonia as a whole, all age groups have increased their number of contributors compared to a year ago. Those under 30 years of age are the ones who have increased the most in Catalonia as a whole, by 6.7%, and they have done so throughout the territory. Where the increase in young people has been highest is in El Pallars Sobirà (18.2%), and in El Pallars Jussà and El Solsonès (8.2% in both counties). Those aged 55 and over increased by 5.8%, those aged 45 to 54 by 3.2% and those aged 30 to 44 by 0.2%.

According to nationality, the year-over-year increase in the number of foreign contributors (11.7%) is higher than that of Spanish contributors (1.6%) in Catalonia as a whole. Foreign contributors increased in all counties and in Aran, while Spanish contributors decreased in 8 counties and in Aran.

Construction is the sector in which affiliations increased the most in relative terms in relation to the previous year, 3.9% in Catalonia as a whole (representing 8,610 more affiliations). The number of new affiliations in the construction sector has increased in 32 counties and the highest increase in relative terms is in El Baix Penedès (7.7%). The services sector has increased by 96,650 affiliations individuals compared to the previous year, a figure that represents a year-over-year increase of 3.4% and increases throughout the territory, except in Aran (−1.7%) and La Ribera d'Ebre (−0.7%). Affiliations in industry increased in Catalonia as a whole, by 1.4%, and in 35 counties and in Aran. Agriculture, which had recorded decreases in the number of Social Security affiliations since December 2021, increased in April by 2.8% year-over-year in Catalonia. Half of this increase was concentrated in El Segrià (780 more affiliations than in April of the previous year).

By type of working day, 19.6% of the employee affiliations in April 2023 are part-time. In the case of women, the proportion is 26.7%, more than double that of men (12.5%).

In terms of temporary contracts, the proportion of temporary contracts of Social Security employee affiliations stands at 12.3%, 8.2 points less than a year ago. The county with the highest level of temporary employment is L’Alta Ribagorça (20.3%) and those with the lowest are El Baix Empordà (9.5%) and L’Alt Empordà (9.6%).
