Catalan exports of products with high technology level fell by 3.3% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2023. The group of products with medium-high technology level is the only one to increase sales abroad, by 25.2%.

Catalonia exported industrial products worth 24,855.7 million euros in the second quarter of 2023, a figure that represents an increase of 6.7% compared with the same quarter of the previous year. The grouping of industrial products according to effort in research and development (R&D) shows that only the group of products with a medium-high technology level increased sales by 25.2%. In contrast, foreign sales of products with a high technology level decreased by 3.3%, those with a medium-low level by 24.7% and those with a low level by 0.1%.

The decrease in exports of high technology industrial products is due to the performance of sales of pharmaceutical products, which, with a value of 2,276.1 million euros, fell by 7.9% compared to the same quarter of 2022. In contrast, the volume of exports of other high technology products increased.

Catalonia imported industrial products worth 25,712.0 million euros in the second quarter of 2023, a figure that represents a year-over-year decrease of 1.4%. Purchases abroad of industrial products of a medium-high technology level are the only ones to increase, by 8.9% year-over-year. In contrast, imports of high technology products decreased by 11.8%, imports of medium-low technology products by 17.0% and imports of low technology products by 2.2%.
