Death Statistics. 2022

In 2022, 70,706 deaths were registered in Catalonia, 35,395 of which were men and 35,311 were women, resulting in a crude mortality rate of 9.02 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants. In relation to 2021, an increase of 1,364 deaths was recorded, 1.97% in relative terms.

By territorial area, Les Terres de l'Ebre (12.18‰), L'Alt Pirineu and Aran (10.56‰) and Ponent (10.25‰) recorded the highest crude mortality rates, although it should be noted that these are the areas with an older population. By contrast, El Camp de Tarragona (8.78‰), El Penedès (8.89‰) and the Metropolitan Area (8.90‰) recorded the lowest rates.

By counties and Aran, the highest crude mortality rates were recorded in La Terra Alta (17.53‰), El Priorat (15.48‰), Les Garrigues (15.10‰) and El Pallars Jussà (15,07‰), while Aran (5.69‰), El Vallès Occidental (7.81‰) and El Vallès Oriental (7.94‰) had the lowest rates.

By months, the winter months, were the ones with the highest mortality, although a second peak was also recorded in the summer. In 2022, January recorded the highest number of deaths (7,452), followed by December (6,866) and February (6,031) and July (6,450), both with the same average number of daily deaths (215). The months with the lowest mortality were September (4,828) and October (5,358).

By weeks, the annual average of deaths was 1,350. The first 5 weeks of the year recorded the highest number of deaths, with a peak in week 4 (1,790 deaths). Apart from January, weeks 50 and 51 (December) had the most deaths, followed by week 29 (July).

The average number of deaths per day was 193. The days on which the highest number of deaths recorded in 2022 were 18, 26 and 27 January (272 each). Daily deaths exceeded 250 on nine days in January and, apart from this month, three days in February (3, 4 and 9), two in December (15 and 20) and 19 July.
