Marriages Statistics. 2022

The total number of marriages in Catalonia in 2022 was 27,100. This figure represents an increase of 14.8% over the total number of registered marriages in 2021, similar to that recorded in the years prior to the covid-19 pandemic.

The crude nuptiality rate in 2022 was 3.46 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants. The average age at first marriage was 36.7 years for men and 34.7 years for women.

Regarding the previous marital status of the spouses, 69.3% of marriages were first marriages for both spouses, while 18.4% were between a person who had been married before and one who hadn’t. Marriages in which both partners had been married before accounted for 12.3% of the total number of marriages in 2022.

In terms of the sex of the spouses, 26,154 marriages (96.5%) were between different-sex couples and 946 (3.5%) between same-sex couples, of which 400 were between two men and 546 between two women.

According to the nationality of the spouses, marriages with two spouses of Spanish nationality were in the majority (79.6%), while mixed marriages (one spouse of foreign nationality and the other of Spanish nationality) accounted for 16.7%. Marriages between spouses of foreign nationality represented 3.7% of the total.

In 2022, the number of marriages increased in all areas of the Territorial Plan. L'Alt Pirineu i Aran and Central Counties, both with 4.0 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants, registered the highest nuptiality rate, while the lowest marriage rates corresponded to Ponent (3.2‰) and Les Terres de l’Ebre (3.3‰).

The age of those marrying for the first time was higher in L'Alt Pirineu i Aran (with ages of 38.6 years for men and 35.8 years for women) and the Metropolitan Area (37.0 years for men and 35.1 years for women). At the other extreme, Les Terres de l'Ebre was the area with the youngest age at first marriage (35.4 years for men and 32.8 years for women).

In 2022, the nuptiality rate increased in Aran and in almost all counties, except for El Pallars Jussà and El Solsonès, which recorded a slight decrease. The highest nuptiality rates were in El Solsonès (5.2 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants) and Aran (5.1‰), followed by El Pallars Sobirà and El Ripollès, with rates of 4.6‰ and 4.5‰, respectively. The counties with the lowest nuptiality rates were El Pallars Jussà (2.7‰), L'Alta Ribagorça (2.8‰) and, with rates of 2.9‰, La Noguera, La Terra Alta and El Barcelonès.
