Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 12/2023

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 88,550 people, a figure that represents an increase of 2.6% in December compared to the previous year, and stood at 3,517,305 people according to provisional data. The number of contributors increased in 36 counties and Aran, including El Solsonès, where it rose by 11.7% (affected by the new county division) and L'Alt Empordà (4.4%). Conversely, the number of contributors fell in La Segarra (−4.2%) and Osona (−1.7%), both affected by the new county division, and in La Ribera d'Ebre (−1.0 %) and La Terra Alta (−0.3%).

In relation to November, the number of contributors fell in Catalonia as a whole by 19,180 people, which means 0.5%. The number of contributors increased in 5 counties and in Aran and decreased in 37.

By sex and compared to a year ago, the number of women contributors to Social Security increased by 2.9% in Catalonia as a whole and the number of men by 2.3%. In Catalonia as a whole, 52.8% of contributors in December were men and 47.2% were women. The county with greatest parity between men (50.9%) and women (49.1%) was El Barcelonès.

In Catalonia as a whole, all age groups increased their number of contributors compared with a year ago, except for the 30 to 44 age group, which decreased by 0.3%. Those aged 55 and over increased the most in Catalonia as a whole (5.7%), followed by those aged under 30 (5.0%).

In December 2023, 82.9% of contributors in Catalonia were of Spanish nationalityand 17.1% were foreigners. The county where the proportion of foreign contributors was highest is La Segarra (33.0%), followed by El Barcelonès (24.6%). By contrast, El Lluçanès and L’Anoia are the counties where the proportion of foreign contributors was lowest (7.6% and 8.8%, respectively). Compared with the same month in the previous year, foreign contributors increased in Catalonia as a whole (8.0%) and did so in 38 counties and Aran. The increase in contributors of Spanish nationality was 1.5%, and they decreased in 5 counties.

The affiliations in the services sector, which represent 79.1% of the total, increased by 3.0% year-over-year, the highest increase of all sectors, and they grew throughout the territory except in 3 counties. The affiliations in industry rose by 1.4% in Catalonia as a whole and also in 29 counties. The increase in construction was also 1.4%, and they grew in 26 counties and Aran. Agriculture is the only sector in which affiliations fell, by 0.4%, a figure that represents 195 fewer affiliations than a year ago.

By type of working day, 19.8% of the employee affiliations in December 2023 were part-time, a similar proportion to that of December 2022 (19.9%). In the case of women, the proportion is 26.9%, more than double that of men (12.7%).

In terms of temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security affiliations for temporary employees stood at 11.6%, 2.1 percentage points less than a year ago. The county with the highest level of temporary contracts was La Ribera d'Ebre (17.6%), while El Baix Empordà (9.1%) and L'Alt Empordà (9.8%) have the lowest levels.
