Statistics on Hotel Activity. 12/2023 and year 2023. Provisional data

The number of overnight stays in hotel establishments in Catalonia increased by 4.4% year-over-year in December 2023, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey. The number of domestic tourism overnight stays decreased by 5.0%: of these, Catalan travellers decreased by 1.3% and travellers from the rest of Spain by 9.5%. Foreign tourism overnight stays increased by 10.8% in year-over-year terms.

By country of origin, tourists from France, the United States and Italy were those with more overnight stays in absolute terms (241.5, 161.6.9 and 143.7 thousands, respectively), and registered positive year-over-year variations by 1.5%, 15.6% and 19.3%, respectively.

By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava registered the highest number of overnight stays (1.5 million, 321.8 thousands and 248.0 thousands, respectively) and registered positive year-over-year variations by 6.1%, 2.8% and 12.0%, respectively.

Moreover, the number of travellers registered in hotel establishments grew by 6.9% year-over-year, with a decrease by 2.2% in domestic tourism and an increase by 15.4% in foreign tourism.

In 2023, overnight stays in hotel establishments increased by 10.8% in Catalonia according to provisional data from the Hotel Occupancy Survey. Overnight stays by domestic tourists increased by 0.2% in comparison with the previous year (−0.6% for Catalan tourists and 1.2% for tourists from other parts of Spain), and foreign tourism increased by 15.8%. By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Brava and Costa Barcelona registered the higher number of overnight stays (23.0, 11.7 and 10.3 million respectively). In 2023 the room occupancy rate in Catalonia was 70.2%. The number of travellers increased by 11.4% in comparison with 2022.
