Standardised death rate by age. 2018-2022

Idescat is publishing the Standardised Death Rate (SDR) by age for the period 2018–2022. In this period, the SDR for Catalonia was 827 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

In terms of the areas in the Territorial Plan, the Metropolitan Area (812) had a lower SDR than the average for Catalonia. By contrast, the SDR was higher in the Girona Counties (840), El Camp de Tarragona (847), Ponent (852), Central Counties (858), Les Terres de l'Ebre (859) and El Penedès (880) areas. In L'Alt Pirineu and Aran area the standardised death rate did not differ significantly from the average for Catalonia.

By sex, the SDR was 1,081 deaths per 100,000 men and 643 deaths per 100,000 women. El Penedès and the Central Counties areas had male death rates significantly higher than average. In terms of women, a significantly higher SDR was recorded in El Penedès, Les Terres de l’Ebre, the Central Counties and the Girona Counties. By contrast, the Metropolitan Area had a significantly lower female death rate.

By age, an SDR of 144 per 100,000 inhabitants aged 0 to 64 years and an SDR of 3,646 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants aged 65 years and over were recorded. By areas, the Metropolitan Area had a lower death rate for both age groups, in contrast to Ponent and El Penedès, which recorded a significantly higher death rate in both age groups. Les Terres de l’Ebre and El Camp de Tarragona areas had a higher SDR only for the under 65 age group, whereas the Central Counties recorded a significantly higher SDR only in the over 65 age group.

By counties, the significantly lower SDRs were in Aran, El Barcelonès and L’Alt Empordà, while El Moianès and L’Anoia top the list of the 20 counties to record an SDR significantly higher than the average.

Finally, by municipalities, Reus and Castelldefels recorded the highest SDRs, whereas Sant Cugat del Vallès and Esplugues de Llobregat had significantly lower SDRs.

The Standardised Death Rate (SDR) by age is the number of deaths (per 100,000 inhabitants) that occur within a given territory according to the death rate by sex and age of the territory in question and with the age structure of a standard population.
