Population and Housing Census. 2022-2023. Structure of the population

Idescat expands the results of the Population Census 2022 and 2023, with information on the population by sex, age, place of birth and nationality. Regarding the geographical scope, data is provided for Catalonia, provinces, areas of the Territorial Plan, counties and Aran, municipalities, census tract groups, districts and census tracts.

By place of birth, 4,975,830 inhabitants were born in Catalonia (63.0%), 1,151,646 inhabitants were born in the rest of Spain (14.6%) and 1,774,487 inhabitants were born abroad (22.5%).

By counties and Aran, the highest percentages of population born in Catalonia were in La Terra Alta (79.3%), Les Garrigues (79.0%) and El Pallars Sobirà (78.8%) and the lowest in El Barcelonès (54.3%) and Aran (55.9%). The highest percentages of population born in the rest of Spain were in Aran (19.4%), El Baix Llobregat (18.8%) and El Tarragonès (18.3%); in contrast, Les Garrigues (5.7%) and La Terra Alta (5.8%) were the counties with the lowest proportion of population born in the rest of Spain.

As for the proportion of the population born abroad, the highest proportions were recorded in the counties of El Barcelonès (30.3%), L’Alt Empordà (29.8%) and La Segarra (29.0%), while the lowest were in El Pallars Sobirà (13.4%) and El Moianès and L’Anoia (both 13.8%).

By size of municipality and place of birth, municipalities with up to 500 inhabitants registered the highest percentage of population born in Catalonia (83.1%), municipalities with 50,001 to 100,000 inhabitants the highest percentage of those born in the rest of Spain (17.7%), and the municipality with more than 1 million inhabitants (Barcelona) the highest percentage of those born abroad (30.9%).

In 2023, the average age of the population was 43.39 years (42.02 years for men and 44.71 years for women). By counties, the highest values were recorded in La Terra Alta (48.54 years), El Priorat (48.06 years) and El Pallars Jussà (47.25 years) and the lowest in El Gironès (40.66 years), El Vallès Oriental (42.22 years) and El Tarragonès (42.37 years).
