Statistics on Commuting for Non-University Studies. SY 2022/23

In the academic year 2022/2023, 1,233,790 enrolled non-university students studied and resided in Catalonia, of whom 82.0% (1,012,305) studied in the same municipality where they resided and 18.0% (221,485) studied in another municipality in Catalonia.

Among municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, the percentage of students studying and residing in the same municipality averaged over 90% (92.6%). As the size of the municipality decreased, this percentage decreased up to the point where, in municipalities with less than 500 inhabitants, the average number of students who studied in the municipality where they lived was less than 25% (22.1%). Among municipalities with a population of more than 5,000 inhabitants, Lleida and Barcelona are the ones that kept the highest percentage of resident students (96.6% and 96.5% respectively), followed by Tortosa (94.9%), La Seu d'Urgell (94.6%) and Olot (94.5%).

With regard to compulsory education, of the 801,260 students who followed primary education and compulsory secondary education, 87.7% studied in the municipality where they resided and 12.3% did so outside their municipality. Regarding primary education, the percentage of students who studied in the municipality where they resided was 90.2%, and 84.4% in compulsory secondary education. The counties with the highest percentage of students in compulsory education who studied and resided in the same municipality were El Barcelonès (94.6%), El Montsià (91.6%) and El Vallès Occidental (90.3%).

With regard to post-compulsory education, of the 240,505 students enrolled in such schooling, 55.9% studied in the municipality where they resided and 44.1% did so outside their municipality. At the secondary school baccalaureate level, the number of resident students who studied in the same municipality (75.2%) was higher than at the intermediate vocational level (45.7%) and the advanced vocational level (38.5%). The counties with the highest percentage of post-compulsory education students who studied and resided in the same municipality were El Barcelonès (81.5%), El Segrià (68.9%), and El Tarragonès (60.9%). At the other extreme, the counties with the lowest percentage of students who studied and resided in the same municipality were El Moianès (16.7%), El Pallars Sobirà (16.7%) and Les Garrigues (16.5%).

In the second cycle of early childhood education, of the 192,030 students enrolled in such schooling, 91.2% studied in the municipality where they resided.
