Methodology

    1. Concepts

    Foreign population
This term refers to the nationality of the person. According to Law 8/2000 on Foreign Persons dated the 22nd of December 2000, a foreigner is anyone who is not a national and whose nationality follows that of their parents; that is, in Spain nationality is determined by blood right (jus sanguinis). In other countries, nationality is determined by birthright (jus soli), that is, one is considered a national of a given country for the mere fact of having been born in that country. This is the case of the United States.
    International migrant
In accordance with the recommendations from the United Nations Statistics Division, an international migrant is a person who moves to live in another country other than their usual country of residence for at least one year. For this reason, not every foreign person is an immigrant.
    Place of residence
This is the territorial area where the person usually resides. Temporary trips do not change the usual place of residence.
    Nationality
Nationality refers to each person's legal citizenship. A citizen is a person who holds legal nationality in the country where they live, and a foreigner is a person who is not a national of that country. A person's country of nationality is not necessarily the same as their place of birth.
    Geographical origin
In this information, the country of nationality is considered the country of origin.

    2. Statistical source

The source of this information is the municipal population register of the 1st of January of each year. The municipal population register is an administrative record which each town hall is required to develop, maintain and manage. Their figures stand as proof of having one's residence and household in the municipality, which can be used as proof of residence for any administrative purpose.

The municipal population register is a record of personal data regulated by the Law on Local Matters and by the Law on Data Protection. These data include: full name, sex, place and date of birth, nationality, national ID (DNI) or, for foreigners, the document that stands in for the DNI. Since 1996, the municipal population census is a record that is constantly updated from which official population figures are extracted: the ongoing municipal population census.
