Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 05/2023. Definitive data

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 2.8% in the month of May with respect to the previous year and stands at 3,531,990 people, according to definitive data. El Baix Penedès (3.8%), El Segrià (3.4%), and El Barcelonès and El Tarragonès (both 3.2%) are the counties with the highest year-over-year increases. On the other hand, the number of contributors fell in L’Alta Ribagorça (−2.1%), Osona (−1.4%, affected by the creation of the new county of El Lluçanès), El Priorat (−0.3%) and La Ribera d’Ebre (−0.1%).

By sex, in Catalonia as a whole and compared to a year ago, the number of women affiliated to Social Security increased by 3.1%, higher than the increase of 2.5% in the number of men.

In Catalonia as a whole, all age groups have increased the number of contributors compared with a year ago, except for the 30-44 age group, which has decreased slightly (−0.1%). In relative terms, those under 30 years of age have increased the most in Catalonia as a whole, by 5.9%, and have done so throughout the territory. Where the increase in young people has been highest is in El Pallars Sobirà (10.8%) and El Segrià (7.1%). Those aged 55 and over increased by 5.5% and those aged 45 to 54 by 2.9%.

By nationality, the year-over-year increase in the number of foreign contributors (10.0%) is higher than that of Spanish contributors (1.4%) in Catalonia as a whole. Foreign contributors increased in all counties and in Aran, while Spanish contributors decreased in 11 counties and in Aran.

Agriculture is the sector where affiliations increased most in relative terms, by 4.0%, compared with the previous year. The highest variation in absolute numbers was in El Segrià (with 970 more affiliations than in May 2022). Construction increased affiliations in relation to the previous year, by 3.1% in Catalonia as a whole (representing 6,795 more affiliations). The number of new affiliations in construction has increased in 31 counties and the highest increase in relative numbers is in El Baix Penedès (7.2%). The services sector has grown by 85,270 new affiliations compared with the previous year, a figure that represents a year-over-year increase of 3.0% and increases throughout the territory, except in Osona (−1.8%, affected by the creation of the new county of El Lluçanès), L’Alta Ribagorça (−1.5%) and El Priorat (−0.2%). Affiliations in industry increased in Catalonia as a whole, by 1.4%, and in 33 counties and in Aran.

The degree of part-time work of employee affiliations in May 2023 was 19.4%. In the case of women, the proportion is 26.6%, more than double that of men (12.4%).

The degree of temporary contracts of Social Security employee affiliations stands at 12.3%, 7 points less than a year ago. The county with the highest level of temporary contracts is L’Alta Ribagorça (19.6%) and those with the lowest are El Baix Empordà (9.1%) and El Alt Empordà (9.3%).

This is the first statistics for which Idescat offers results with the county division established by the recently approved Law 7/2023, dated 10 May, on the creation of the El Lluçanès county. For this reason, the variations in the counties of El Bages and Osona are affected by this territorial change since the results for previous periods are offered with the previous territorial division (41 counties and Aran).

In El Lluçanès there were 2,850 people affiliated to Social Security on 31 May. Of these, 55.4% are men and 44.6% are women. By age, it stands out as the Catalan County with the highest proportion of contributors aged 55 and over, 26.3% compared with 19.4% for Catalonia as a whole. By nationality, this county also stands out because it has the lowest percentage of foreign contributors (7.2% compared with 17.3% in Catalonia as a whole).
