The number of foreign tourists arriving in Catalonia increased by 7.4% on the year–over–year data for December 2016. According to the country of habitual residence, among the majority countries of origin, registered a positive year-on-year variation: France (5.2%), United Kingdom (2.6%) and Germany (15.6%) while Italy registered negative rate (−17.9%).
On the other hand, according to the reason for the trip, leisure and holiday increased by 6.7% and professional reasons by 67.1%. As for the principal type of accommodation, market accommodation grew by 14.8%, as opposed to a decline of 6.2% in non-market accommodation.
In 2016 as a whole, the number of foreign tourists arriving in Catalonia increased by 4.0% compared to 2015, according to provisional data. According to the country of habitual residence, among the majority countries of origin, registered a positive variation United Kingdom (6.9%) and Germany (9.3%) while France and Italy registered negative rates (−3.0% and −1.1%, respectively)
The Statistics on Foreign Tourism in Catalonia provides monthly data on the number of foreign visitors (tourists and day-trippers) whose primary destination of their trip is Catalonia, according to the different routes of entry. It also provides information on the main characteristics of these trips (principal type of accommodation, reason of travel, method of organisation, mean of transport and country of habitual residence). The data reference period is considered the month in which the trip ends, regardless of its length.
