The population of foreign nationality resident in Catalonia,was 1,023.,398 inhabitants on 1 January 2016, and accounted for 13.6% of the total population, according to the Municipal Population Register. The foreign population decreased by 4,671 people in relation to the previous year, with a year-over-year variation of -0.5%. This reduction was reflected in 34 counties.

On 1 January 2016, the counties,with the highest foreign population were L’Alt Empordà (24.9%), La Segarra (24.8%) and El Baix Empordà (19.1%), followed by El Gironès, La Selva, El Segrià and El Pla d’Urgell, with proportions of around 18%. The counties with the lowest foreign population were El Moianès (7.0%), El Berguedà (7.2%), L’Anoia (7.6%) and El Ripollès (7.7%).

In Catalonia as a whole, the main country of origin in 26 counties across Catalonia was Morocco, while in 10 counties, as well as in L’Aran, it was Romania. In El Barcelonès, the largest percentage corresponded to Pakistan; in La Garrotxa, to India; in El Moianès, to Mali; in L’Alt Urgell, to Portugal, and in La Cerdenya, to Bolivia.

By country of nationality, with respect to the previous year, we should highlight the registered decrease of the Ecuadorian population, by 2.923 people (−9,3%); the Moroccan population, by 2.866 (−1,3%); the Romanian population by 2.794 (−3,0%) and the Bolivian population, by 2.642 (−7,5%). Moreover, there are increases in the Chinese population, by 3.035 people (5,9%); Honduran population, by 2.560 (12,0%); the Ukrainian population, by 1.636 (8,8%); the Venezuelan population, by 1.138 (12,5%), and the Russian population, by 1.124 (5,3%)

The source of this data is the Municipal Population Register on January 1, which is the administrative register that accounts for the residents of a municipality and constitutes proof of their residence in said municipality. Its formation, maintenance and management is the responsibility of each respective local council.

The extended results on foreign population, derived from a statistical treatment of the Municipal Population Register, provides information on the foreign population resident in Catalonia and is disaggregated by continents and countries. It can be viewed by different areas: the total for Catalonia, provinces, areas of the Territorial Plan, counties, municipalities and municipal districts with more than 45,000 inhabitants.
