Catalonia exported industrial products amounting to 15,732.2 million of euros in the fourth quarter of 2016, involving a 1.7% increase on a year-over-year basis. Sales of products of high technology level are those which increased the most in the fourth quarter (6.4%), followed by products of medium-high technology level (3.8%). In contrast, sales of products of medium-low technology level fell by 2.6% and those of low level products by 1.6%.
The value of imports in the fourth quarter amounted to 18,128.9 million of euros, with a 4.6% increase on a year-over-year basis. Overseas purchases increased for all technology levels: high technology level by 11.3% year-over-year; low technology level by 5.0%; medium-high technology level by 3.2%; and medium-low technology level by 2.1%.
In 2016, Catalonia exported industrial products amounting to 61.951,7 million of euros, a figure that represents an increase of 2.5% with respect to the previous year. Exports of products of high technology level were the ones that increased the most (8.9%), followed by sales of industrial products of medium-high technology level, which, with a cumulative value of 30,725.9 million of euros, grew by 2.5 % with respect to 2015. Industrial products of medium-low technology level amounted to 7,982.6 million of euros, involving a decrease of 1.4% in relation to 2015, while sales of products of low technology level increased by 2.1% year-over-year, with a value of 16,529.4 million of euros.
With regard to imports, Catalonia imported industrial products amounting to 71,187.0 million of euros in 2016, involving an increase of 4.2% with respect to the previous year. Regarding technology levels, all imports increased, except for the medium-low technology level (-4.0% year-on-year). Medium-high technology level imports increased by 7.0% year-on-year; those of high level by 3.9%, and those of low level by 3.7%.

The source of information is the territorial operations file of the Customs and Special Taxes Department of the Tax Administration Agency.
