The number of contributors to Social Security in Catalonia increased by 3.5% in March 2017, with respect to the same period of the previous year, standing at 3,068,200 individuals.
Affiliates increased in all counties, except for La Terra Alta, where they fell 0.7% in comparison with the same quarter of the previous year. Osona, L'Urgell and El Vallès Occidental had a year-over-year growth of 4.0%, representing the highest growths in comparison with March 2016.
By sex, as of March 2017, 53.5% of those contributors were men, and 46.5% women. By age, 15.2% of contributors in Catalonia were under 30 years of age; those 30 to 44 made up 42.3%; those 45 to 54, 26.4%, and those 55 and over constituted 16.0% of the total. Regarding nationality, 87.4% of those contributors in Catalonia were of Spanish nationality, while foreigners constituted 12.6% of the total. The annual increase of foreign contributors (7.8%) is higher than that recorded by contributors with Spanish nationality (2.9%).
The number of affiliations in Catalonia on 31 March 2017 was 3,220,664, 3.6% higher than in March 2016.
By sectors and in comparison with March of a year ago, the number of affiliations rose in all economic sectors: construction (6.9%), services (3.5%), industry (2.8%) and agriculture (2.1%).
According to the type of employment relationship, the number of affiliations from both paid employment (4.2%) and self-employment (0.8%) saw an increase.
Every quarter Idescat has published the number of contributors and affiliations to Social Security based on the Contributors' Registered Place of Residence by municipality, county and Aran, area of the Territorial Plan, province and Catalonia as a whole. Contributors are listed according to their main demographic variables (sex, age and nationality) and the affiliations are disseminated according to the employment relationship, contribution regime and activity sector.
