The number of overnight stays in hotel establishments in Catalonia decreased by 0.5% year-over-year for the month of August 2017, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey. Domestic tourist overnight stays decreased by 5.5%: Catalan travellers decreased by 4.0% and travellers from the rest of the State decreased by 7.6%. Foreign tourism overnight stays increased by 1.6% year-over-year.
By country of origin, tourists from France and United Kingdom log the most overnight stays in absolute terms (1,268.7 and 1,024.5 thousand, respectively), although they decreased in year-over-year terms (−7.8%; −1.6%, respectively).
For tourism brands, Costa Barcelona, Costa Daurada and Barcelona were the locations that presented the most overnight stays in absolute year-over-year variation (2,266.3; 2,130.5 and 2,126.0 thousand, respectively). Though, only Costa Daurada rose in year-over-year terms (2.2%)
On the other hand, the number of travellers registered in hotel establishments decreased by 0.50% year-over-year with a decreased in domestic tourists (−4.2%) and foreign tourism increased by 1.8%.
On the occasion of the creation of El Moianès county, the municipalities of Castellcir, Castellterçol, Granera and Sant Quirze Safaja (which were part of the Costa Barcelona brand), from January 2016 they become part of Paisatges de Barcelona brand. This change represents a break in series with the results of previous periods.

The Hotel Occupancy Survey is one of the main sources of statistics for gauging tourist activity. Carried out each month by INE, it provides information on travellers, overnight stays and the occupancy rate in hotel establishments. Idescat analyses these variables according to the provenance of the travellers by place of origin and by destination zones and by category of the establishment.
