Idescat has published the definitive data of the Birth Statistics for 2016. That year, 68,974 live births were recorded in Catalonia. Compared with 2015, live births had decreased 2.1%.
The Birth Statistics provide annual information on the deliveries and births (live births and stillbirths) of mothers residing in Catalonia, according to demographic and social characteristics. The data is territorially disaggregated by municipality, county, area of the Territorial Plan and province.
The original source of the data is the statistical bulletin on births, which is filled in when registering the baby in the Civil Registry.
Until 2011, the data published referred to birth registrations made in Catalonia of mothers residing in Catalonia. As of 2012, the data has been reported annually in two phases: the provisional data (based on births registered in Catalonia of mothers residing in Catalonia) and the definitive data (based on births registered in both Catalonia and other autonomous communities of mothers residing in Catalonia).
The Birth Statistics, together with the statistics on deaths and marriages, form part of the Natural Population Movement Statistics which Idescat produces in collaboration with the INE and the Ministry of Health.
