Competitive Position of the Industrial Sector. Q3 2017

In the third quarter of 2017, the Price Competitiveness of Industry Index of the Catalan manufacturing industry with respect to industrialised countries reached a level of 105.8 points, which implies a decline of 1.1 points in year-over-year terms.

On the other hand, the Index of the Revealed Competitiveness (which measures the evolution of the market share of Catalan manufacturing exports in the main markets with which Catalonia has commercial flows) declined in the third quarter of 2017 with respect to the same period of the previous year, going from an index of 95.3 to one of 93.5.

The Indicators of the Competitive Position of the Industrial Sector are analysed on the basis of two indexes: the Price Competitiveness of Industry Index of the Revealed Competitiveness of industry.

The Price Competitiveness of Industry Index is defined as the product of the euro exchange rate by an index of relative prices of the Catalan manufacturing industry (section C of the CCAE-2009). An increase in the competitive in prices is interpreted as a reduction in the competitiveness of Catalan manufacturing in relation with competing countries and markets.

The Index of the Revealed Competitiveeness is defined as the market share of exports by the Catalan manufacturing industry (sections 5 to 8 of the SITC-Rev. 3) for each of the considered countries, indexed in the first quarter of 1999. As opposed to the Price Competitiveness Index , an increase in the Index of the Revealed Competitiveness is interpreted as an improvement in competitiveness.
