The number of overnight stays in hotel establishments in Catalonia decreased by 12.5% year-over-year for the month of April 2018, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey. Domestic tourist overnight stays decreased by 19.7%: of these, Catalan travellers decreased by 16.9% and travellers from the rest of the State by 22.1%. Foreign tourism overnight stays decreased by 8.5% year-over-year. Note that in 2018 Easter was celebrated between March and April, while in 2017 it took place in April.
By main country of origin, tourists from France and United Kingdom presented the highest figure in overnight stays in absolute terms (626.2 and 302.0 thousand, respectively).
By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Brava and Costa Barcelona were the locations that totalled the highest number of overnight stays in absolute terms (1,845.9, 826.7 i 712.8 thousand, respectively).
On the other hand, the number of travellers registered in hotel establishments decreased by 9.8% year-over-year with falls in domestic as well as foreign tourism by 13.9% and 7.1%, respectively.

The Hotel Occupancy Survey is one of the main sources of statistics for gauging tourist activity. Carried out each month by INE, it provides information on travellers, overnight stays and the occupancy rate in hotel establishments. Idescat analyses these variables according to the provenance of the travellers by place of origin and by destination zones and by category of the establishment.
