Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Youth hostel
Facility that permanently or temporarily is used to provide accommodation, as a temporary residence, for short stays or for undertaking an activity, by youths, either individually or collectively, and also under certain conditions, by adult families and groups of infant children.
Nature classes
Summer camp with accommodation that offers sufficient and adapted facilities for didactic work with children dealing with knowledge about nature and the environment. This typology includes such youth facilities called sea schools, sky schools, education centres environmental interpretation centres and others of a similar nature.
Youth camp
Permanent facility, destined to provide camping activities for infant and youth organisations and groups. Is located on appropriately delimitated land, where overnights stays are in tents, has basic equipment.
Summer camp (Casa de colonies)
Facilities that can permanently or temporarily accommodate groups of infants or youth taking part in education activities in their spare, cultural or leisure time.
School farm
Special form of youth camp that offers sufficient and adequate facilities for didactic work with infants or youth focusing on agrarian and livestock techniques.
Youth facilities
Summer camps, youth hostels, school farms, nature classrooms and youth camps which have the required legal permits for Catalonia and which are part of the Catalan Network of Youth Facilities.

Methodological aspects

The data for youth facilities comes from the Catalan Network of Youth Facilities (XCIJ) of the General Youth Directorate, which belongs to the Catalan Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Families.

The XCIJ is made up of all the summer camps, youth hostels, school farms, nature classrooms and youth camps which have the required legal permits for Catalonia.
