Definition of concepts

Museum
Permanent institution, non-profit making and open to the public and that contains a collection of cultural properties in order to conserve them, document them, exhibit them and promote them.

Methodological aspects

Law 17/1990, on 2 November, on Museums created the Museums Register of Catalonia, an official inventory of Catalan museums. The application of all of the procedures and terms provided for in the administrative procedure has meant that since 1995 are recorded and collections are defined.

Museums and collections are defined as permanent, non-profit institutions that offer the public access to the holdings of fixed and movable cultural assets they conserve, document, study and exhibit.
