Methodological aspects

The legislation that regulates the activity of the Generalitat de Catalunya Police Force-Mossos d'Esquadra is highly extensive and specific. It was created by Law 19/1983 and retains the historical name of the Catalan police at the end of the 17th century. The Mossos d'Esquadra was the first professional police force in Catalonia and was a pioneer in the whole of Spain.

The deployment of the Mossos d'Esquadra in Catalonia began in 1994 and ended in 2008.

The Mossos d'Esquadra has four main areas of action: public safety, administration, judicial investigation and traffic. In addition, it is part of its functions to protect the authorities and dependencies of the Government of Catalonia; take care of public safety and public order; act as administrative and judicial police, and interurban traffic.

A table showing the number of personnel of each rank is presented: superintendent, intendent, inspector, sub-inspector, sergeant, corporal and officer. The territorial level is the area of the Territorial Plan and the total for Catalonia.
