Methodological note

The Statistics on Divorces, Separations and Annulments are an annual statistical operation aimed at the study of divorce, separation and annulment proceedings brought before the courts.

The aim of these statistics is to determine the number of judgements and decrees on divorces, separations and annulments issued during the reference year and to provide information on some of the main sociodemographic characteristics of the spouses (sex, age, nationality, number of children), the types of separation or divorce (by mutual agreement or contested) and other variables of social interest associated with the court proceedings (child support, custody, length of proceedings, etc.).

The basic unit of the statistics is the judgement, decree or public deed of a divorce, separation or annulment issued by the corresponding court or notary.

The period of reference is the calendar year, based on the date on which each judgement, decree or public deed was issued. The information is obtained on a continual basis throughout the same period of reference (year t) and the first four months of the following year (year t+1). Data is disseminated annually.

The Statistics provide information for Catalonia and its four provinces.
