Methodological note

Methodological aspects

The Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) offers information in relation to the names and surnames of the whole population resident in Catalonia.

The source is the Population Registry of Catalonia, an administrative registry containing current obligatory data on residents registered in the municipal censuses of inhabitants from the City Councils of Catalonia, which may be referred to by the public administrations when exercising their authority. Data are on January, 1.

From 2021, the data is sourced from the Continuous Register of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

It should be explained that the source used to produce the database contains the names in capital letters without accents so that , in some cases it is not possible to differentiate between names in Catalan and Spanish, when the accent is the only differentiating feature. In these cases the two options are presented together (Maria/María, Àlex/Álex).

Unavailable information is represented using the symbol ":". When the value is lower than that of the minimum unit to be able to estimate the statistical operation or if it effects statistical confidentiality, the symbol used is "..".
