Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Frequency Modulation (FM)
Type of angular modulation that transmits information in a carrier wave by varying its frequency. FM applications include radio, where receptors use an FM detector and the tuner is able to receive the strongest signal of those transmitted on the same frequency. Another of the characteristics of FM is the ability to transmit stereophonic signals.

Methodological aspects

The Catalan Audiovisual Council (CAC) is the independent authority that regulates audiovisual communication in Catalonia. Its purpose is to oversee compliance with applicable regulations by both public and private suppliers of audiovisual communication services. It is governed by Law 2/2000, of May 4, on the Catalan Audiovisual Council, and by the framework law on the sector, i.e. Law 22/2005, of December 29 on audiovisual communication in Catalonia.

The Council has full responsibility over suppliers of audiovisual services at an autonomous region and local level, regardless of the system of dissemination used. This includes, among others, the following media:

  • Radio and television of the Generalitat de Catalunya
  • Private television in the area of Catalonia
  • Local television, whether public or private
  • FM radio, whether public or private
  • Suppliers of new audiovisual communication services set up in Catalonia

The CAC has responsibilities over the content when the state televisions disconnects to offer Catalan content.
