Definition of concepts
- Rural Agents Corps
- Public authority officers who perform functions as special administrative police and judicial police, in accordance with the provisions of the law. The Government of Catalonia exercises the powers of monitoring, control, protection, integrated prevention and cooperation in environmental management through the Rural Agents Corps.
Methodological notes
The Rural Agents Corps was established in 1986 with the aim of creating an administrative structure capable of meeting the challenge of ensuring proper protection of nature in Catalonia. The Corps has jurisdiction throughout Catalonia, except in Val d'Aran.
Law 17/2003 sets out the structure of the Corps and defines its functions, which are grouped into different areas: investigation and prevention of forest fires; protection of wildlife; natural areas and biodiversity; and forestry.
The Rural Agents Corps is currently undergoing a phase of expansion to address new challenges arising from climate change and safety, as well as to complete the development of its territorial structure and internal organisation, which will enable the deployment of all levels of the Corps.
A table of total staff by category is presented and will be progressively completed as all categories of the three levels –basic, executive and senior– are developed. Data are provided for Catalonia as a whole, and disaggregated by sex and by areas of the Territorial Plan.
