Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Release
Set of actions that involve the release of specimens of wild game species during the hunting season in order to hunt them in a short period of time, without breeding purposes.
Hunting area
Land submitted to a special venery system where hunting is regulated. The manager of the site has the right to authorise hunting and is responsible for its management and is liable for the damages that the hunting species could cause.
Big game
Large animals, with low annual mortality and high life expectancy. In order to reduce the inevitable competence for growth, these species have a low reproduction rate. The margin for hunting them is lower, as these species do not have a natural capacity to recover their original values prior to each year's hunting season.
Small game
Small animals. Their populations typically have high reproduction rates that also enable them to have high breeding rates. They are some of the species considered to be prey, subjected to predators. Therefore, they can actively respond to severe reductions in number.
Game species
Animal species that may be hunted according to legislation subject to general, temporary or specific restrictions, depending on the species.
Restocking of population
Set of actions that involve the authorised release of autochthonous species of wildlife outside of the legal hunting period, in order to recover the reproduction of their populations and densities in the environment.

Methodological aspects

Hunting is a sport or recreational activity, therefore in order to do it, several aspects must be taken into account, such as the procedures to obtain licences and permits, the places where hunting is permitted, the time of the year it can be done, game species, etc. There is a also a Strategic Plan which aims to define a hunting model that is sustainable within nature and compatible with other territorial activities.

The repopulation and release of autochthonous hunting species requires prior authorisation and must be included in the approved Technical Hunting Management Plans (PTGC). These instruments for the planning of hunting are designed to ensure sustainable use of hunting species that is compatible with the conservation of ecosystems and endangered species.

At the end of the season, private and local hunting areas provide data on releases and repopulations within the territory. The table shows the sum of the releases and repopulations.
