Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Cable transport
Displacement using aerial installations (or terrestrial in the case of funiculars).
Traveller
Person who moves outside of their usual environment. Travellers are classified by their place of residence, which in the case of residents of Spain is the autonomous community they usually reside in. The term traveller in the occupancy section is used as a synonym of tourist or a person that stays for at least one night in any form of accommodation.

Methodological aspects

The Law 12/2002, dated 14th June, on cableway installations, has the aim of regulating the construction, putting into service and exploitation of cableway installations designed to carry persons which run entirely through Catalan territory.

This Law governs funicular railways and other installations with vehicles mounted on wheels or on other suspension devices where traction is provided by one or more cables; cable cars where are cabins are lifted and/or displaced by one or more carrier cables (including gondola lifts and chair lifts); drag lifts, where users are dragged by means of a cable. It does not apply to lifts, conventional cable-operated tramways or rack railways, among others.

Cableway installations may be for public or private use.
