Methodological note

The Indicators of Service Sector Activity (AISS) measure the short-term evolution of the activity of companies operating in the service sector in Catalonia.

The Service Sector Turnover Index (IASSVN) reflects the evolution of one of the most important sectors of the Catalan economy through the turnover variable. Turnover comprises the amounts invoiced by the company for the provision of services and the sale of goods, which are the object of the company's trade activity. These are recorded including taxes on goods and services, with the exception of VAT, which is passed on to the customer.

Idescat prepares the general index for the sector on a monthly basis and calculates the indices for Catalonia for the trade sector and for other services. In accordance with the Catalan Classification of Economic Activities 2009 (CCAE-2009), other services are broken down into the following sectors: transport and storage, accommodation and food service activities, information and communications, professional, scientific and technical activities, and administrative and support service activities.

In addition, Idescat publishes the calendar adjusted turnover index and the seasonally and calendar adjusted index, which allow for the calculation of rates of change between months of homogeneous duration and composition, without seasonal fluctuations. The adjustment is carried out for all the series provided.

The primary source of information is the continuous monthly survey of the Indicators of Service Sector Activity statistics, conducted by the INE, which surveys each month around 5,000 economic activity units operating in these sectors in Catalonia.

The indices are published with base 2021 and linked series are offered since 2005. As of 2021, the INE has introduced changes in the compilation of the IASS in order to harmonise them with those produced by Eurostat and to facilitate their joint analysis by users.

The indices are calculated according to a chain-linked Laspeyres methodology, with weights updated annually from the base year, using information from the Annual Services Survey, the Annual Trade Survey, and other administrative sources for statistical purposes, such as the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) and the Social Security General Fund.
