Methodological note

The Retail Trade Index (ICD) is an indicator that measures the monthly evolution of the activity of companies in the retail trade sector in Catalonia by means of the turnover variable.

Turnover includes the amounts invoiced by companies for the provision of services and sales of goods, not including indirect taxes, in the performance of its main activity and any secondary activity carried out by the company. It is accounted for on a net basis by deducting sales returns and volume discounts. Cash discounts and discounts for prompt payment are not deducted.

Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 November 2019, developed in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1197 of 30 July 2020, establishes the technical specifications, definitions and concepts regulating the production of this indicator. Idescat calculates the general retail trade index and the general index excluding service stations. The latter is disaggregated by product type, according to the company's activity, and calculates the indices for Catalonia for food products and for the rest of products. All indices are calculated both at current prices and at constant prices taking the month of December of the year immediately preceding the survey as the reference month.

In addition, Idescat publishes the calendar adjusted Retail Trade Index and the calendar and seasonally adjusted index, which allows for the calculation of variation rates between months of homogeneous duration and composition and without seasonal fluctuations. The adjustment is carried out for all the series offered.

The base year of the index is 2021 and in accordance with European standards, the index for January 2024 is the first to be published with this base. The indicators for 2021, 2022 and 2023 have been recalculated from updated samples and the back series has been linked from December 2020 to the beginning in order to maintain the rates of change.

The primary source of information is the monthly continuous survey of the Retail Trade Indices statistic, carried out by the INE.

The indices for the past 3 months are provisional.
