Last update: December 18, 2025.

Methodological note

The Survey on the Use of Time is a survey targeted at the population aged 10 and over, gathering information on the daily activities of the population over a period of twelve months, doing so through a personal activity log, a household questionnaire and an individual questionnaire.

Three editions of the Survey on the Use of Time have been carried out in Catalonia, one spanning the years 2002 and 2003 and conducted by the INE under an agreement with Idescat, and the 2010–2011 and 2024 editions, conducted by Idescat.

The production and design of the Survey on the Use of Time project was executed in accordance with the current directives issued by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) for the project of standardised European surveys on the use of time. This ensured the comparability of the results both at a national and international level.

The main aim of the Survey on the Use of Time is to obtain first-hand data on the scope of unpaid work taking place in the household, the distribution of responsibilities among the family members living there, the participation of the population in cultural and leisure activities, and the use of time of specific social groups (young people, the unemployed, seniors, etc.), all for the purpose of being able to formulate family-oriented and gender-equal policies, and estimate the satellite accounts of the household sector.
