Methodological note

The Large Store Sales Index is an indicator that measures the monthly evolution of the sales volume of non-specialised retail trade establishments considered large stores located in Catalonia.

Large stores are defined as retail establishments with a sales floor area equal to or greater than 2,500 square metres.

Idescat calculates the general indices, that for food industry and that for the rest of products, at current prices and constant prices, based on its own information provided by all non-specialised large stores in Catalonia. The calculated indices are fixed-base.

Furthermore, Idescat publishes the calendar adjusted and the seasonally and calendar adjusted Large Store Sales Index, which allows for the calculations fo rates of change between months of homogeneous duration and composition and without seasonal fluctuations. These adjustments are applied to all the series offered.

The INE calculates a large store sales index for Spain as a whole with the same disaggregation, but based on a different methodology, as it includes both specialised and non-specialised large stores, excludes indirect taxes (such as VAT) and the indices are not fixed-base. For these reasons, the results cannot be directly compared.

The base year of the Index is 2021 and with this new base the entire series available from January 1995 has been retrospectively calculated.

In accordance with the CCAE-2009, it should be specified that these indices do not include service stations.
