Methodological note
The Statistics on Mortgage Foreclosures are based on data from the Land Registries collected through the National Statistical Institute (INE). These Statistics are compiled from certifications of title and encumbrances. Foreclosure is a judicial procedure that may conclude in various ways and does not necessarily imply the eviction or enforcement of the occupants of the property.
The unit of analysis is the registered property classified as urban housing, and each certification is understood as the start of mortgage foreclosure proceedings on that property.
In the dissemination of the results, housing foreclosures are broken down according to the legal form of the registered owner, that is, whether the owner is a natural person or a legal person.
