Methodological note

The Industrial New Orders Received Index (IECI) is a short-term indicator used to measure the evolution of Catalan companies' business activity in terms of future demand (reception of orders) aimed at industrial sectors.

The IECI is an index value, i.e. it measures the aggregate evolution of quantities, qualities and prices. The fact that orders received by companies first lead to production and then to sales makes the IECI a predictive indicator of what will happen to the industry in the short term. It also provides a fairly thorough view of short-term industry when analyzed alongside the Industrial Production Index (IPI) and the Turnover Index on Industry (IVNI).

The IECI includes all the main industrial sectors defined by the European Communities Commission Regulation No. CE 656/2007, which modifies Regulation No. CE 586/2001 regarding the definition of the main industrial sectors (disaggregation by economic destination of goods: consumption, equipment and intermediates).

The information is broken down into the main industrial sectors established in the Regulation previously cited, which Idescat incorporates, in relation to Catalonia, into the Non-Energy Industrial Products Index.

The indices use the Laspeyres methodology with fixed weights for the base year (2015) based on information from the Annual Industrial Survey (EIAE)

To obtain this short-term indicator, a continuous monthly survey of 2,300 companies operating in those sectors in Catalonia is conducted.

According to European Union standards, the indices are published using base 2015.

The data from the thirteen previous months are provisional.
