Methodological note

The indicator measures the population trends of 17 butterfly species at EU-level and is presented as Index 2000 = 100 with smoothed values.

The indicator is based on data from 18 EU Member States (Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom).

The start year of the national time series ranges from 1990 to 2016, so the index is currently presented as an EU aggregate only with smoothed values interpolating the index's annual values.

The data are integrated and provided by the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme partnership and the (SPRING) (Strengthening Pollinator Recovery through INdicators and monitoring) project. As for the Catalonia indicator, the data measure the populations of 20 species and the database from which the data are drawn is the Catalan Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (CBMS).
