Unpaid domestic work. Demographic survey 2007

83% of the population of Catalonia aged over 16 years does unpaid domestic work, according to the Demographic survey 2007. By sex, this percentage represents 92% of the female population and 73% of the male population.

The level of participation in unpaid domestic work presents major inequalities by sex. Almost half of women (47%) do housework on their own, while only 9% of men do. Equal distribution of domestic work is around 30% of the population for both sexes, but the most common situation of the male population (35%), is that only doing a small amount of the housework, while for women this percentage is as low as 13%. Finally, 27% of the male population states that that they do no housework at all, compared to 8% of the female population.

This survey provides statistics on the level of participation by the population in unpaid domestic work in their own homes (household chores, looking after children aged under 15 years, looking after the elderly or people with health problems), as well as information on participation in unpaid care of people in other homes (children, the elderly and people with health problems). The information is disaggregated by sex and crossed with other variables such as the type of home, age, marital status, level of education and economic activity.

The Demographic survey 2007 is a sample based survey aimed at Catalan households and people residing in them. The sample, taken throughout the Catalonian territory, contains information on 10,580 households and 28,910 people.
