Economic Survey on Social Services. 2019

The 2,838 social services centres providing personal care in Catalonia provided services worth 2,351 million euros in 2019, according to the Economic Statistics on Social Services Centres and Entities. The public administration contributed 60% of the centres' funding, user fees accounted for 32%, and private funding, social income and other income accounted for the remaining 8%.

Regarding the legal status of the centres, 51% are social initiatives, 27% are companies and 22% are public initiatives. 42% of the centres care for the elderly, 25% for children, adolescents and young people, 19% for people with disabilities, 6% for people with a mental illness, and 8% for other groups. The increase in the number of centres for children, adolescents and young people has been significant, rising from a total of 438 centres in 2014 to 717 centres in 2019.

Social services centres in Catalonia employed a total of 98,621 people,80% of whom are women. Employees, who are 9 out of 10 people employed by the centres, had an average age of 39 years.

Moreover, some private non-profit social services entities carried out other complementary services, with a value of 426 million euros, not included in the survey of the centres. In terms of sources of funding, 54% came from the public administration, 16% from user fees, while social income, private contributions and other income accounted for 30%. The number of people employed was 18,241.

The proportion of volunteers and unpaid staff in social services is very high, as evidenced by the survey of non-profit centres and private entities, where a total of 66,859 people worked an average of 101 hours per year.
