Wage Structure Survey. 2022
The average annual earnings per worker in Catalonia were 28,774.55 euros in 2022, 2.2% more than the previous year's gross average wage, according to the Wage Structure Survey. The average annual earnings for women rose 2.6% year-over-year and stood at 25,659.03 euros and for men the figure also rose by 2.1% compared with 2021, that is, it amounted to 31,878.42 euros. The average earnings per hour earned by women (13.12 euros) in 2022 amounted to 88.35% of the average hourly earnings by men (14.85 euros).
By type of working day, the average annual earnings of full-time workers were 33,233.20 euros, 3.8% higher than the gross average wage of the previous year, while that of part-time workers rose by 2.7% and stood at 13,635.10 euros. The average earnings per hour were 14.61 euros for full-time workers and 10.62 euros for part-time workers.
By branch of activity, the average annual earnings of workers in financial and insurance activities were the highest (45,556.94 euros), while that of employees in the hostelry industry were the lowest (16,896.01 euros).
By occupation, the annual average earnings of directors and managers was 59,304.40 euros, 106.1% higher than the average earnings of all workers. At the other extreme, that of workers in unskilled occupations was 17,786.75 euros, 38.2% lower than the average earnings.
As regards to the distribution of annual earnings, the median wage stood at 24,772.36 euros, 4,002.19 euros less than the average wage. By pay deciles, the annual earnings of 10% of the employees with the lowest incomes were less than 10,988.10 euros (1st decile), while at the other extreme the annual earnings of the 10% with the highest income exceeded 50,516.48 euros (9th decile).
Analysing the distribution of employees based on annual earnings with respect to the guaranteed minimum wage (SMI), the highest concentration, with 43.03% of the employees, belong to the wage section of 1 to less than 2 SMI. By sex, women were majority in the 2 lower sections of the distribution (less than 1 SMI and from 1 to less than 2 SMI), while men predominated in the other sections, with an increase of the proportion of men as wages are higher. These differences in distribution resulted in the fact that in the lowest wage income section (less than 1 SMI) more than two thirds were women (69.31%), while in the highest income sections (4 to less than 5 SMI and 5 SMI and over) almost two-thirds were men (63.88% and 64.18%, respectively).
