Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 03/2025
The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 40,650 people in March 2025, a figure that represents an increase of 1.1% compared to the same month in the previous year, to stand at 3,616,555 people according to provisional data. The number of contributors rose in 29 counties led by Osona (1.8%), and Les Garrigues, El Bages, El Gironès and El Vallès Occidental (1.7%, all four). By contrast, contributors fell in 13 counties and Aran. The Easter effect must be considered, given that last year it was celebrated in March.
In to February, the number of contributors increased in Catalonia as a whole by 25,325 people (0.7%) and was up in 35 counties. The main increases were in La Selva (3.4%) and El Tarragonès (2.3%). Conversely, the number of contributors fell in five counties and also in Aran which recorded the biggest drop (−3.7%).
By sex and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole rose by 18,845 people and the number of men by 21,805. This represents year-over-year increases of 1.1% and 1.2%, respectively.
In Catalonia as a whole, all age groups increased their number of contributors in March with respect to a year ago, except for the 30 to 44 age group which fell by 1.0%. Contributors aged 55 and over increased the most (3.7%) and were up in all but four counties. The main growth was in La Segarra (5.4%), L'Alt Penedès (5.3%) and El Vallès Oriental (5.2%).
By nationality, foreign national contributors rose in Catalonia as a whole by 4.5% compared to the same month in the previous year and did so in 36 counties. Spanish national contributors increased by 0.4% in Catalonia as a whole and also in 22 counties.
Affiliations in the services sector were up by 1.3% year over year; they grew in 28 counties while falling in 13 counties and Aran. Affiliations in industry rose by 0.5% in Catalonia as a whole and were higher in 23 counties. The rise in construction was 1.7%, the largest increase of all sectors, and it grew in 25 counties and Aran. Agriculture registered 975 fewer affiliations than a year ago (−1.9%).
By type of working day, 19.4% of employee affiliations in March were part-time. In the case of women, the proportion was 26.1%, more than double the figure for men (12.7%).
In terms of temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security affiliations for temporary employees stood at 9.8%, 1.3 percentage points less than a year ago. The counties with the highest level of temporary employment were La Ribera d’Ebre (13.9%) and L’Alta Ribagorça, El Pallars Jussà and El Pallars Sobirà (13.3%, all three) while El Baix Empordà had the lowest level (7.5%).
