Input-Output Framework for Catalonia. 2021
Idescat publishes the 2021 Input-Output Framework for Catalonia (MIOC-2021), a summary of statistics which provides the most comprehensive and structured description available of the Catalan economy with detailed information on 64 branches of activity.
The input-output framework is an internationally recognised statistical tool which furnishes a comprehensive assessment of the economic situation in a given territory and measures the economic relationships between all sectors of the economy in great detail. In the case of Catalonia, MIOC-2021 offers detailed information on the 64 branches of activity and includes GDP estimates on the supply, demand and income sides. MIOC-2021 has been prepared following the methodological guidelines set out in the current European System of Accounts (ESA 2010), approved in May 2013, and in accordance with the criteria defined in the 2024 Benchmark Revision.
MIOC-2021 is the basis on which the macroeconomic indicators of the Catalan economy (annual, quarterly and territorial accounts) are built. The robust empirical information groundwork provided by MIOC-2021 makes it possible to draw up a consistent set of estimates for the main economic variables included in the Annual Economic Accounts for Catalonia (2000-2025 series) which Idescat will publish in March 2026.
This edition introduces improvements over previous versions. For the first time, it includes the Use Table at purchasers’ prices, which is added to the Supply Table and the Use Table at basic prices. The simultaneous availability of both use tables allows the implicit calculation of the valuation matrix, which compiles trade and transport margins, along with net taxes on products.
MIOC-2021 also expands on the employment information contained in previous editions. In addition to data on jobs and full-time equivalent jobs, it includes variables such as people employed and hours worked which enhances the analysis of the sectoral labour market.
Data from the new MIOC reveal that Catalonia's GDP in 2021 stood at 245,443 million euros, a figure previously provided in the 2024 Benchmark Revision estimate which was released last March in the publication of the Annual Economic Accounts for Catalonia. Aside from the overall figure, the estimates for some variables have been revised in the process of building MIOC-2021 from the perspective of demand in the accounting balance process intrinsic to the preparation of these statistics.
One of the most outstanding features of MIOC-2021 is the detail it provides on foreign trade by product. It is the only official Catalan source to separate purchases and sales with foreign countries and with the rest of Spain. The data show that, in 2021, exports of non-tourism goods and services from Catalonia amounted to 148,313 million euros. Fifty-seven per cent of this total went to the rest of the world and the remaining 43 per cent to the rest of Spain.
