Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 12/2025
The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 69,370 persons in December 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. This figure represents an increase of 1.9%, standing at 3,658,505 persons, according to provisional data. Contributors rose in all counties and Aran, with the largest increases in relative terms recorded in El Baix Penedès (3.6%), Osona (3.3%, albeit affected by the change in the county assignment of the municipality of Aiguafreda) and Les Garrigues (3.1%).
As for the municipalities of Catalonia, the number of contributors increased or remained stable in 81% of them (765 municipalities) compared to the same month in the previous year, while it declined in the remainder (182 municipalities). All municipalities in Catalonia with more than 50,000 inhabitants posted an increase in their number of contributors compared to a year earlier, led in relative terms by Manresa and Sabadell (both 2.8%) and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (2.7%).
Compared to November, the number of contributors fell in Catalonia as a whole by 38,845 persons (−1.1%) and did so in 38 counties, led by La Ribera d’Ebre (−2.1%). Only 4 counties within L’Alt Pirineu and Aran Area, together with the singular territorial entity of Aran, recorded increases. Aran posted the most notable increase compared to the previous month (12.7%).
By sex, and compared to a year earlier, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole increased by 32,710 and that of men by 36,665. This represents year-over-year increases of 1.9% in both cases.
In Catalonia as a whole, the number of contributors increased in all age groups except for the 30 to 44 age group (−0.3%). The most notable increase was among contributors aged 55 and over (4.8%), followed by those under 30 (4.4%).
Foreign national contributors rose in Catalonia as a whole by 5.0% compared to the same month in the previous year and increased in all counties and Aran. The largest relative increases were recorded in Les Garrigues (12.8%) and La Noguera (10.3%).
Spanish national contributors increased by 1.3% in Catalonia as a whole and also rose in 34 counties; by contrast, they declined in 6 counties and Aran and remained stable in 2 counties. The most notable increases were in El Baix Penedès (3.1%) and Osona (2.9%).
The number of Social Security affiliations stood at 3,852,275 in December, representing an increase of 2.0% compared to the same month in the previous year. By sector, affiliations in the services sector were up by 2.1% year over year and increased in all counties and Aran. Affiliations in industry rose by 1.0% in Catalonia as a whole and also increased in 31 counties and Aran. The increase in construction was 3.4%, the largest of all sectors; with affiliations growing in 36 counties and Aran, declining in 3 counties and remaining stable in a further 3. Affiliations in agriculture rose by 0.4%, with 190 more affiliations than a year earlier.
By type of working day, 19.5% of employee affiliations in December were part-time. In the case of women, the proportion was 26.2%, more than double the figure for men (12.9%).
In terms of temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security affiliations for temporary employees stood at 10.0%. The counties with the highest level of temporary employment were El Pallars Sobirà (14.7%) and La Ribera d’Ebre (14.3%), while El Baix Empordà (7.6%) registered the lowest level.
The analysis of contributors residing in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants over the 12 months of 2025 shows that November was the month in which the highest number of such contributors was recorded in the vast majority of municipalities (19 out of 24). As for the remainder, Girona, Reus and Tarragona registered their peaks in July; Castelldefels in May, and Lleida in August. Conversely, January was the month in which the lowest number of such contributors was recorded in most cases (21 out of 24). Only Sant Cugat del Vallès and Terrassa recorded their lowest figures in August, and Cerdanyola del Vallès did so in July.
