Population and Housing Census. 2025. Structure of the population
On 1 January 2025, the number of inhabitants of Catalonia who were born in Catalonia was 4,987,842 (61.4%), those born in the rest of Spain 1,097,269 (13.5%) and those born abroad 2,039,015 (25.1%).
By counties and Aran, the highest percentages of population born in Catalonia were in El Lluçanès (83.3%), El Pallars Sobirà (78.2%) and La Terra Alta (77,9%) and the lowest were in El Barcelonès (52.0%) and Aran (53.9%). The highest percentages of population born in the rest of Spain were in Aran (18.1%), El Baix Llobregat (17.6%) and El Tarragonès (17.1%). In contrast, El Lluçanès (5.4%) and Les Garrigues and La Terra Alta (both 5.5%) were the counties with the lowest proportion of population born in the rest of Spain.
As for the proportion of the population born abroad, the highest proportions were recorded in the counties of El Barcelonès (34.1%), L'Alt Empordà (31.6%) and La Segarra (31.5%), while the lowest were in El Lluçanès (11.4%), El Pallars Sobirà (14.3%) and El Moianès (14.6%).
By municipality size and place of birth, municipalities with up to 500 inhabitants registered the highest percentage of population born in Catalonia (82.5%), municipalities with 50,001 to 100,000 recorded inhabitants the highest percentage of those born in the rest of Spain (15.9%), and the municipality with more than 1 million inhabitants (Barcelona) registered the highest percentage of those born abroad (34.6%).
In 2025, the average age of the population was 43.69 years (42.31 years for men and 45.04 years for women). By counties, the highest values were recorded in La Terra Alta (48.77 years), El Priorat (48.46 years) and El Pallars Jussà (47.46 years) and the lowest were in El Gironès (41.04 years), La Segarra (42.57 years) and El Vallès Occidental (42.73 years).
