Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 04/2026
The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 68,675 people in April 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, a figure that represents an increase of 1.9%, standing at 3,725,235 people. Contributors increased in all counties, except for La Terra Alta, El Priorat and Aran, where it remained stable. The most notable increases, in relative terms, were in El Baix Penedès (3.8%), Osona (3.4%), La Segarra and El Segrià (2.8% for both).
Regarding the municipalities of Catalonia, the number of contributors increased or remained stable in 82% of municipalities (778 municipalities) compared to the same month of the previous year, while it decreased in the rest of municipalities (169). All municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants in Catalonia increased the number of contributors compared to a year ago, led, in relative numbers, by Vilanova i la Geltrú (3.6%), Viladecans (3.4%), Manresa (3.2%) and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (3.1%).
Compared to March , the number of contributors increased by 31,810 people (0.9%) in Catalonia as a whole, doing so in 33 counties. The growth in La Selva (2.7%) and El Baix Empordà (2.6%) stood out.
By sex, and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole increased by 31,650 and that of men by 37,020, representing year-over-year increases of 1.8% and 1.9%, respectively.
In Catalonia as a whole, the number of contributors increased in all age groups, except for the 30 to 44 age group, which decreased slightly (−0.1%). The increases in the youngest group (4.0%) and the oldest group (4.8%) stood out.
Foreign national contributors grew in Catalonia as a whole by 4.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, doing so in all counties and Aran. Spanish national contributors grew by 1.4% in Catalonia as a whole, doing so in 36 counties.
The number of Social Security affiliations stood at 3,920,625 affiliations in April, a figure that represents a 1.8% increase compared to a year ago (a variation slightly lower than that recorded by the number of contributors).
By sector, affiliations in the services sector registered a year-over-year increase of 2.1%, growing throughout all the territory, except in Aran and La Terra Alta. In industry, affiliations increased by 1.4% in Catalonia as a whole and also did so in 34 counties and Aran. In the case of construction, affiliations decreased by 1.8% in Catalonia as a whole, doing so in 24 counties, while they increased in 17 counties and Aran and remained stable in one county. Affiliations in agriculture increased by 2.7%, with 1,485 more affiliations than a year ago.
It should be noted that these variations may be affected by the fact that, from January 2026 onwards, the results of these Statistics are presented under the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities (CCAE-2025), which is a comprehensive revision of the previous Classification structure (CCAE-2009), used for results until December 2025.
By type of working day, 19.0% of employee affiliations in March were part-time work. In the case of women, the proportion was 25.5%, more than double that of men (12.5%).
Regarding temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security employee affiliations of a temporary nature stood at 9.8%. The counties with the highest level of temporary contract were El Pallars Sobirà (13.5%), and La Ribera d'Ebre and El Pallars Jussà (13.2% for both), and the one with the lowest level of temporary contract was El Baix Empordà (7.3%).
