Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). February 2026.
Idescat publishes, standardised in Catalan, the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), corresponding to Delegated Regulation (EU) no. 2026/195 of the European Commission, of 13 November 2025, amending Regulation (EC) no. 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of Europe, concerning the NUTS classification and the lists of existing administrative units and local administrative units (OJ L Series, 27 January 2026).
Apart from this version, the database of territorial and entity codes (BDCTE) also disseminates the other previous versions of the NUTS nomenclature, approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe and published in the corresponding OJ.
The main change in the current version, apart from small rearrangements in the internal territorial divisions of some countries and some name changes, is the restructuring of the NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 levels of Bulgaria.
The NUTS is the list of the regions of the European Union structured in three hierarchical levels, established by Eurostat in order to provide a uniform division of European Union territorial units for the production of regional statistics.
Based on the version corresponding to Regulation (EC) 176/2008 (OJ L61 of 5 March 2008), Idescat has standardised the different versions in Catalan, in accordance with the criteria of the Onomastics Office of the Institute of Catalan Studies.
Currently, for the standardisation of NUTS toponymy, the World Gazetteer of the Onomastics Office of the Institute of Catalan Studies is used.
