Of the total number of residents in Catalonia as of 1 January 2025 (8,124,126 people), Antonio and José, for men (83,502 and 77,011, respectively), and Maria/María and Montserrat, for women (83,034 and 72,858, respectively), are the most common given names among the population.
By counties and Aran, Antonio is the most frequent male name in L'Alta Ribagorça (27. 49‰) and El Baix Llobregat (26.39‰), while the counties where it is less frequent are El Pla de l'Estany (8.59‰) and El Lluçanès (10.38‰).
For the first time, the average age of each name is provided. In the case of Antonio, the average age is 62.5 years. Among those born between 1960 and 1969 it is the most popular male name and among those born before 1960 it is the second most popular male name. However, among those born between 2000 and 2009 it ranks 48th and among those born between 2010 and 2019 it ranks 73rd.
The most frequent male names from the three countries with the most foreign residents are: Mohamed in the case of Morocco (15,807 people), Andrés Felipe (710 people) in the case of Colombia.and Marco (792 people) in the case of Italy.
As for female names, Maria/María stands out in El Priorat (34.99‰) and El Ripollès (32.07‰), and it is less common in El Baix Ebre (14.29‰) and El Montsià (15.64‰).
In the case of Maria/María, the average age is 54.3 years. It was the most common name among women born before 1950 and then dropped to 23rd place among women born between 1970 and 1979. It has recently regained positions in the ranking, and is the fourth most common female name among women born between 2010 and 2019.
The most frequent female names from the three countries with the most foreign residents are:Fàtima/Fátima (5,962 people) in the case of Morocco, Valentina (561 people) in the case of Colombia and Maria/María (1,194 people) in the case of Romania.
As for surnames, Garcia/García, Martínez, López and Rodríguez are at the top of the list.
By counties and Aran, Garcia is the first most frequent surname in 38 counties of Catalonia, Rodríguez is the first most frequent surname in Aran, Sans tops the ranking in Les Garrigues and, Font, Masip and Llop are the first most frequent surnames in El Lluçanès, El Priorat and LaTerra Alta, respectively.
