Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 05/2026
The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 90,885 people in May 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, a figure that represents an increase of 2.5%, standing at 3,793,500 people. Contributors increased in all counties and Aran. The most notable increases, in relative terms, were in Aran (4.4%), El Baix Penedès (4.2%), Osona (3.9%) and El Segrià (3.3%).
Regarding the municipalities of Catalonia, the number of contributors increased or remained stable in 85% of municipalities (803 municipalities) compared to the same month of the previous year, while it decreased in the rest of municipalities (144). All municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants in Catalonia increased the number of contributors compared to a year ago, led, in relative numbers, by Manresa (4.2%), Vilanova i la Geltrú (4.1%), and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (4.0%).
Compared to April, the number of contributors increased by 68,265 people (1.8%) in Catalonia as a whole, doing so in all counties and Aran. The growth in El Segrià (4.4%) and La Ribera d'Ebre (4.0%) stood out.
By sex, and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole increased by 40,740 and that of men by 50,145, representing year-over-year increases of 2.3% and 2.6%, respectively.
In Catalonia as a whole, the number of contributors increased in all age groups. The increases in the youngest group (5.1%) and the oldest group (5.0%) stood out.
Foreign national contributors grew in Catalonia as a whole by 6.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, doing so in all counties and Aran. Spanish national contributors grew by 1.6% in Catalonia as a whole, doing so in 39 counties and Aran.
The number of Social Security affiliations stood at 3,996,150 affiliations in May, a figure that represents a 2.5% increase compared to a year ago (the same variation recorded for the number of contributors).
By economic activity sector, all sectors increased the number of affiliations, except for construction. Affiliations in the construction sector decreased by 0.5% in Catalonia as a whole and in 16 counties, while they increased in 21 counties and Aran and remained stable in 5 counties. In the services sector, affiliations increased by 2.8% in Catalonia as a whole and also did so in all counties and Aran. In the case of industry, affiliations increased by 1.6% in Catalonia as a whole and in 33 counties and Aran. Affiliations in agriculture increased by 2.2%, with 1,320 more affiliations than a year ago.
It should be noted that these variations may be affected by the fact that, from January 2026 onwards, the results of these Statistics are presented under the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities (CCAE-2025), which is a comprehensive revision of the previous Classification structure (CCAE-2009), used for results until December 2025.
By type of working day, 19.0% of employee affiliations in May were part-time work. In the case of women, the proportion was 25.6%, more than double that of men (12.6%).
Regarding temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security employee affiliations of a temporary nature stood at 10.2%. The counties with the highest level of temporary contract were El Pallars Sobirà (14.2%) and El Pallars Jussà (13.6%), and the one with the lowest level of temporary contract was El Baix Empordà (7.4%).
