In 2025, 61.4% of the population lived in urban centres (which occupied 1.38% of the area of Catalonia), 28.2% lived in urban clusters (representing 3.79% of the territory) and 10.5% lived in rural grid cells (representing 22.85% of the territory). The remaining 71.98% of the area of Catalonia corresponds to uninhabited rural grid cells.

Of the 32,915 1 km² grid cells into which the Catalan territory is divided, 23,763 had no population. Of the 9,152 1 km² inhabited grid cells, 466 corresponded to urban centres, 1,276 to urban clusters and 7,410 to rural grid cells.

The average density of Catalonia was 253 inhabitants per km². 72.2% of the 1 km² grid cells into which the Catalan territory is divided had no population. 48.4% of the population of Catalonia lived in grid cells with a density of less than 10,000 inhabitants per km², which occupied 27.23% of the territory, while the remaining 50.6% lived in grid cells with a density of more than 10,000 inhabitants per km², which only occupied 0.57% of the territory. Within this last group, there were 4 grid cells where the density exceeded 50,000 people per km²: two of these were in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Collblanc, La Torrassa, La Florida and Les Planes), one in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Santa Rosa, El Fondo and Llatí) and another in Badalona (Llefià, La Salut and La Pau).

By county, El Barcelonès is the county with the highest percentage of the population residing in urban centres (99.57%), followed by El Vallès Occidental (81.10%) and El Gironès (72.02%).
